As the war progressed, it was clear to the experienced core of German pilots that they were seriously deficient in quality aircraft.  The Albatros series was proving to be a dead end, while the Pfalz D.III was incapable of superceding it.  The answer was the Fokker D.VII.  It was this machine, and German tactical organization and leadership, which kept them competitive in the air war.
