For the Germans, 1916 was a difficult year, while for Antony Fokker, it was a disaster. His Fokker E.III "Eindecker" was now outclassed, and gradually newer Allied scouts took control of the air over the trenches. The Halberstadt D.II and III machines, of which only about 100 were built, helped stem the tide, but it wasn't until the Albatros D.II was introduced that the German pilots had a machine capable of beating the DH-2s and Gunbuses. In the spring of 1917, the Albatros D.IIs and IIIs slaughtered the RFC's recon force during "Bloody April." |
